Kwang-Gae, Po-Eun, Ge-Baek

Kwang-Gae…

Kwang-Gae is named after the famous Kwang-Gae-T’o-Wang, the 19th King of the Koguryo Dynasty, who regained all the lost territories including the greater part of Manchuria. The diagram represents the expansion and recovery of lost territory, and the 39 movements refer to the years of his reign.

Number of Movements: 39.
Ready Position: Parallel Ready Stance. Bring both hands together, so the thumbs and index fingers touch. Look through the gap between your hands.

The diagram for this pattern assumes that the student is stood on line AB and is facing D.

  1. Pull both hands quickly to the side describing a straight line, and then bring them slowly in a circular motion forming closed ready stance B. Bringing the left foot to the right foot.
  2. Move the left foot to D forming a left walking stance, executing a right upset punch. Perform in slow motion.
  3. Move the right foot to D forming a right walking stance, executing a left upset punch. Perform in slow motion.
  4. Turning the right foot in slightly, move the left foot to the side front of the right foot, and then move the right foot to D forming a right    walking stance, executing a right high palm hooking block.
  5. Move the right foot to C in a sliding motion forming a right L-stance toward D, executing a low knife-hand guarding block.
  6. Move the right foot to the side front of the left foot, and then move the left foot to D forming a left walking stance, executing a left high palm hooking block.
  7. Move the left foot to C in a sliding motion forming a left L-stance    toward D, executing a low knife-hand guarding block.
  8. Move the left foot to D forming a right rear foot stance, executing a high knife-hand guarding block.
  9. Move the right foot to D, forming a left rear foot stance, executing a high knife-hand guarding block.
  10. Move the left foot to the side front of the right foot, turning counter-clockwise pivoting on the left foot, forming a left walking stance toward C, executing a right upward palm block. Perform in a slow motion.
  11. Move the right foot to C, forming a right walking stance, executing a right upward palm block. Perform in a slow motion.
  12. Bring both backhands in front of the abdomen, in a circular motion hit the left palm with the right knife-hand, moving the left foot to the right foot forming a close stance toward C.
  13. Execute a left pressing kick to E keeping the position of the hands as they were in 12.
  14. Execute a left middle side kick to E. Perform 13 and 14 as a consecutive kick.
  15. Lower the left foot to E forming a right L-stance, executing a right high inward knife-hand strike, bringing the left side fist in front of the right shoulder.
  16. Execute a left downward side fist strike to E, forming a close stance toward C, pulling the left foot to the right foot.
  17. Execute a right pressing kick to F keeping the position of the hands as they were in 16.
  18. Execute a right middle side kick to F. Perform 17 and 18 as a consecutive kick.
  19. Lower the right foot to F forming a left L-stance, executing a left high inward knife-hand strike, bringing the right side fist in front of the left shoulder.
  20. Execute a right downward side fist strike to F, forming a close stance toward C, pulling the right foot to the left foot.
  21. Move the left foot to C forming a left low stance, executing a palm pressing block. Perform in slow motion.
  22. Move the right foot to C forming a right low stance, executing a palm pressing block. Perform in a slow motion.
  23. Move the right foot to D in a stamping motion forming a sitting stance toward F, executing a right high side back fist strike.
  24. Execute a middle double forearm block, forming a right walking stance toward D, pivoting on the left foot.
  25. Execute a left low reverse outer forearm block to D, shifting to C maintaining a right walking stance, keeping the position of the right hand as it was in 24.
  26. Execute a right high flat fingertip thrust, forming a right low stance, slipping the right foot to D. Perform in slow motion.
  27. Move the left foot on line CD in a stamping motion, forming a sitting stance toward F, executing a left high side back fist strike.
  28. Execute a middle double forearm block, forming a left walking stance toward C, pivoting on the left foot.
  29. Execute a right low reverse outer forearm block to C, shifting to D maintaining a left walking stance, keeping the position of the left hand as it was in 28.
  30. Execute a left high flat fingertip thrust, forming a left low stance slipping the left foot to C. Perform in slow motion.
  31. Move the right foot to C in a stamping motion forming a right walking stance, executing a high twin vertical punch.
  32. Move the left foot to A in a stamping motion forming a left walking stance, executing a twin upset punch.
  33. Execute a right middle front snap kick to A, keeping the position of the hands as they were in 32.
  34. Lower the right foot to the left foot, and then move the left foot to A forming a left L-stance toward B, executing a middle knife-hand    guarding.
  35. Move the left foot to B forming a left walking stance, executing a left high punch.
  36. Move the right foot to B in stamping motion forming a right walking stance, executing a twin upset punch.
  37. Execute a left middle front snap kick to B, keeping the position of the hands as they were in 36.
  38. Lower the left foot to the right foot, and then move the right foot to B forming a right L-stance toward A, executing a middle knife-hand  guarding.
  39. Move the right foot to A forming a right walking stance, executing a right high punch.

Bring the left foot back to the ready position.

Po-Eun…

Po-Eun is the pseudonym of the loyal subject Chong Mong-Chu (1400 AD) who was a famous poet, and whose poem “I would not serve a second master though I might be crucified a hundred times” is know to every Korean. He was also a pioneer in the field of physics. The diagram represents his unerring loyalty towards king and country towards the end of the Koryo Dynasty.

Number of Movements: 36

  1. Move the left foot to B forming a right L-stance, executing a middle forearm guarding.
  2. Pull the right foot to the left knee joint forming a left one-leg stance toward D, lifting both fists while turning the face toward A.
  3. Execute a right pressing kick to A, keeping the position of the hands as they were in 2.
  4. Lower the right foot to A forming sitting stance toward D, executing a right middle knife-hand strike.
  5. Execute a left turning punch, maintaining a sitting stance.
  6. Execute a left fore fist pressing block and a right middle inner forearm block, maintaining a sitting stance.
  7. Execute a right fore fist pressing block and a left inner forearm block, maintaining a sitting stance.
  8. Execute a middle inner forearm wedging block, maintaining a sitting stance.
  9. Thrust to C with the right back elbow supporting the right fore fist with the left palm, keeping the face as it was in 8, maintaining a sitting stance.
  10. Execute a right middle punch to D slipping the left palm up to the right elbow joint, maintaining a sitting stance.
  11. Thrust to C with the left back elbow supporting the left fore fist with right palm, keeping the face as it was in 10, maintaining a sitting stance.
  12. Execute a right horizontal punch to A, maintaining a sitting stance.
  13. Cross the left foot over the right foot forming a right X-stance toward D, executing a right low outer forearm front block, bringing the left finger belly on the right under forearm.
  14. Move the right foot to A forming a left L-stance, executing a U-shaped grasp.
  15. Bring the left foot to the right foot forming a closed stance toward D, thrusting to the sides with a double side elbow, turning the face toward B. Perform in slow motion.
  16. Move the left foot to B forming a sitting stance toward D, executing a right high side back fist strike, and a left low outer forearm block.
  17. Cross the right foot over the left foot forming a left X-stance toward D, executing a low outer forearm front block bringing the right finger belly to the left side fist.
  18. Move the left foot to B forming a sitting stance toward D, executing a low reverse knife-hand guarding block.
  19. Execute a forearm middle guarding block, forming a left L-stance     toward A, pivoting on the left foot.
  20. Pull the left foot to the right knee joint to form a right one-leg stance toward D, lifting both fists while turning the face toward B.
  21. Execute a left pressing kick to B, keeping the position of the hands as they were in 20.
  22. Lower the left foot to B forming a sitting stance toward D, executing a left middle knife-hand strike.
  23. Execute a right turning punch, maintaining a sitting stance.
  24. Execute a right fore fist pressing block and a left middle inner forearm block, maintaining a sitting stance.
  25. Execute a left fore fist pressing block and a right inner forearm block, maintaining a sitting stance.
  26. Execute a middle inner forearm wedging block, maintaining a sitting stance.
  27. Thrust to C with the left back elbow supporting the left fore fist with the right palm, keeping the face as it was in 26, maintaining a sitting stance.
  28. Execute a left middle punch to D slipping the right palm up to the left elbow joint, maintaining a sitting stance.
  29. Thrust to C with the right back elbow supporting the right fore fist with left palm, keeping the face as it was in 28, maintaining a sitting stance.

Bring the left foot back to the ready position.

Ge-Baek…

Ge-Baek is named after Ge-Baek, a great general in the Baek Je Dynasty (660 AD). The diagram represents his severe and strict military discipline.

Number of Movements: 44.
Ready Position: Parallel Ready Stance.

The diagram for this pattern assumes that the student is stood on line AB and is facing D.

  1. Move the right foot to C forming a right L-stance toward D, executing a X-knife-hand checking block.
  2. Execute a right low twisting kick keeping the position of the hands as they were in 1.
  3. Lower the right foot to D forming a right walking stance, executing a right middle punch.
  4. Execute a left middle punch, maintaining a right walking stance. Perform 3 and 4 in a fast motion.
  5. Move the right foot to C forming a left walking stance toward D, executing a left outer forearm rising block.
  6. Execute a left low outer forearm block, maintaining a left walking stance. Perform 5 and 6 in a continuous motion.
  7. Execute a high double arc hand block to AD looking through the hands, maintaining a left walking stance.
  8. Turn the face toward D, forming a right bending ready stance A.
  9. Lower the left foot to AD forming a sitting stance toward AC, executing a left palm scooping block.
  10. Execute a right middle punch, maintaining a sitting stance. Perform 9 and 10 in a continuous motion.
  11. Execute a left front back fist strike, maintaining a sitting stance.
  12. Move the right foot on line AB and then move the left foot to C   forming a right L-stance, executing a middle knife-hand guarding block.
  13. Execute a left low front snap kick, keeping the position of the hands as they were in 12.
  14. Lower the left foot to C forming a left low stance, executing a left high flat finger tip thrust.
  15. Execute a right high flat finger tip thrust, maintaining a left low stance.
  16. Execute a right middle side kick to C, pulling both hands in the        opposite direction.
  17. Lower the right foot to C forming a right L-stance toward D, executing a middle forearm guarding block.
  18. Move the right foot to D turning counter-clockwise forming a right      L-stance toward C, executing a middle forearm guarding block.
  19. Move the left foot to D turning counter-clockwise forming a right        L-stance toward D, executing a middle knife-hand guarding block.
  20. Move the left foot on line CD forming a sitting stance toward A,     executing a right 9-shape block.
  21. Move the right foot to D turning counter-clockwise forming a left   walking stance toward C, executing a left low knife-hand block.
  22. Execute a right middle turning kick, then lower the right foot to C.
  23. Execute a right flying side kick to C. Perform 22 and 23 in a fast      motion.
  24. Land to C forming a right walking stance, executing a high twin vertical punch.
  25. Execute a high double arc-hand block to AC looking through the hands, maintaining a right walking stance.
  26. Execute a left upset punch, maintaining a right walking stance.
  27. Move the right foot on line CD, then move the left foot forming a left walking stance toward D, striking the left palm with the right front  elbow.
  28. Jump to D forming a right x-stance, executing a high double forearm block.
  29. Move the left foot to BC forming a sitting stance toward BD, executing a left palm scooping block.
  30. Execute a left middle punch, maintaining a sitting stance. Perform 29 and 30 in a continuous motion.
  31. Execute a right front back fist strike, maintaining a sitting stance.
  32. Move the left foot to C forming a left walking stance, executing a right high front reverse knife-hand strike.
  33. Move the left foot to A about half a shoulder width, executing a right middle turning kick to C.
  34. Lower the right foot to C, pivoting on the right foot turn counter-clockwise forming a left walking stance toward D, executing a high twin vertical punch.
  35. Execute a right middle, middle knuckle punch, bringing the left side fist in front of the right shoulder, forming a right L-stance toward D pulling the left foot.
  36. Move the right foot to D forming a sitting stance toward B, executing a left 9-shape block.
  37. Execute a low reverse knife-hand guarding block to C, maintaining a sitting stance.
  38. Execute a low knife-hand guarding block to D, maintaining a sitting stance. Perform 37 and 38 in a continuous motion.
  39. Move the left foot to D in a stamping motion forming a sitting stance toward A, executing an outer forearm W-shape block.
  40. Move the left foot to C in a stamping motion, forming a sitting stance toward B, executing an outer forearm W-shape block.
  41. Move the right foot to C forming a right walking stance, executing a right outer forearm rising block.
  42. Execute a left middle punch, maintaining a right walking stance.
  43. Move the right foot on line CD forming a left walking stance toward D, executing a left outer forearm rising block.
  44. Execute a right middle punch, maintaining a left walking stance.

Bring the right foot back to the ready position.
